Registration Roadmap

Step-by-Step Pathway for Indian Nurses

01

Select Your State Board of Nursing (BON)

In the US, nursing licenses are granted by state boards (e.g. New York, Texas, Illinois). Some boards do not require a US Social Security Number (SSN) for initial examination, making them accessible to international applicants.

02

Credential Evaluation (TruMerit / CGFNS / NNAS)

Submit your nursing degree or diploma transcripts (BSN, ADN, or international equivalency) and registration certificates to an approved evaluation service (such as TruMerit CES or NNAS for Canada) to verify educational comparability.

03

Apply to the Board & Register with Pearson VUE

Submit your licensure by examination application to the state board. Simultaneously, register an account on Pearson VUE NCLEX and pay the exam registration fee.

04

Receive Authorization to Test (ATT) & Book Date

Once the board approves your eligibility, Pearson VUE issues an Authorization to Test (ATT) validity window (typically 90 days). You can book your exam at any Pearson VUE professional test centre worldwide.

05

Pass NCLEX & Complete VisaScreen

Upon passing the NCLEX-RN, your state license is issued. To obtain an immigrant work visa (EB-3 / H-1B), you complete an English proficiency test (IELTS/PTE) and secure a CGFNS VisaScreen certificate.

NCLEX-RN: Frequently Asked Questions

Can Indian nurses take the NCLEX-RN in India?

Yes. Pearson VUE offers the NCLEX-RN at official international test centres across India (including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata). You must first obtain an Authorization to Test (ATT) from your chosen US state board or Canadian regulator before you can book a test date.

How many questions are on the NCLEX-RN, and how long is it?

Under the 2026 NCSBN Test Plan, the exam consists of 85 to 150 items (including 15 unscored pretest questions) with a maximum time limit of 5 hours. The computer adaptive testing (CAT) algorithm evaluates your responses and stops as soon as it determines with 95% statistical confidence whether you are above or below the passing standard.

What are Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) case studies?

Every test taker receives three unfolding clinical case studies consisting of 6 questions each (18 items total), simulating real electronic health records (EHR). These questions measure the six steps of the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM): recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action, and evaluate outcomes.

What is the passing score for the NCLEX-RN?

There is no fixed percentage or numerical passing score. Instead, scoring is based on a logit ability scale. You pass when the CAT algorithm determines with 95% certainty that your ability level is above the passing standard set by the NCSBN Board of Directors.

What is the retake policy if I do not pass?

NCSBN policy requires candidate to wait a minimum of 45 days between examination attempts. Candidates can test up to eight times in a single year, though individual US state boards may place additional limits.
