Working abroad as a nurse: common questions
Which exam do I need to work as a nurse abroad?
It depends on the country: the NCLEX-RN for the USA and Canada (except Quebec), the NMC CBT and OSCE for the UK, the NMBA outcomes-based assessment (NCLEX-RN then an OSCE) for Australia, the NCNZ assessment for New Zealand, and Prometric licensing exams set by DHA, DOH, MOHAP, SCFHS or Qatar’s DHP for the Gulf.
Can I take these licensing exams in my home country?
The NCLEX-RN and the NMC CBT are delivered globally by Pearson VUE at accredited test centres in over 180 countries. Practical OSCEs for the UK, Australia, and New Zealand are taken in person after arriving with your sponsoring employer. Each country guide below lists the steps in order.
Is the NCLEX-RN accepted outside the USA?
Yes. Every Canadian province and territory except Quebec uses it, and Australia uses it as Stage 1 of its outcomes-based assessment for internationally qualified registered nurses.
